Hey, Apple, don’t you think it’s a bad idea to give a 1.8cm thick computer 16gb of ram, eight cores and an independent graphics card? Well physics certainly does!
My computer generally overheats whenever I play CITY SKYLINES. Since the windows partition ignores the integrated Intel graphics and goes straight to the Nvidia card it also loves running hot all the time!
Is this apple’s fault? No... not really; no one told them I’d be using the ultraportable computer for light to mid demand videogames. Plus, they did worry a lot about cooling, I believe my dual fans can go up to 5000RPM, which is a fucking lot!
But clearly not enough. So... I’m designing a plate for my PC. But I’m barely beginning. I only have the basic design considering the bounds of the computer. As best as I could measure, the fillets apple makes on this computer are half an inch in radius. Something the internet doesn’t know apparently. I also did not expect a huge corporate giant like apple to have dimensions in inches.
Since I don’t want to remove the back plate, the air would enter from the normal ports to the sides of the computer,I also want to cause a sort of vacuum on the way out of the computer by the hinge. This would all be 3d printed on PLA plastic, probably in two phases since my school might not have machines with the correct size to do so.
I was thinking about two of these bad boys, these are thin enough... but I don’t know how to wire them, and I’d like to wire them to the thunderbolt port rather than the USB port.
If you can think of better thin fans, and/or help with the wiring issue, I’d be very thankful!

I might look at blower fans for this...

*Reads dimentions in inches*
*Hisses*
It sounds like a great idea... specially the
“Axially Grooved Bearing
” part, you know that gave some computer builder a small orgasm.

Fun fact, probably not true radii, Apple likes squircles: https://99percentinvisible.org/article/circling-square-designing-squircles-instead-rounded-rectangles/

my laptop gets pretty hot too. i put it up on blocks to increase the airflow underneath and that pretty much does the trick

It’s an aluminum case, right? I’ve often wondered if there could be a docking station milled out of aluminum that’s just a massive heat sink for the laptop- so big that it can cool passively.

Lol. I’d probably build a two channel box, see if you can build separate channels for the cpu and gpu, suck in air from below if you can get clearance, some feet or something, and blow it out the back.

Just do the thing i do, prop up tge computer, lie a tower fan on its side, and have it blow under it

Oh for fucks sake apple! That is a good choice though, also a great article to read!
This is going to be a motherfucking pain in the ass to build certainly....

I don’t know...nobody told them you’d be using a light, ultraportable machine for light to mid-range gaming, no. However, they designed it with the capability to be able to do so (they chose the hardware specs), so poor cooling in THAT regard is a bit of an oversight - if they are giving it a mid-range video card that is independent, it should be able to handle it.
High RPMS/CFM on a cooling fan is well and good, but if there aren’t vents to allow that hot air out and the cool air in, then it won’t matter. It also matters how small the fan is. Laptop cooling fans are relatively small, so regardless how fast they spin, they don’t move a lot of air.
Long story short, I have a few friends with Apple laptops and overheating is common for them as well...their equipment is generally good, but I sometimes find it’s a bit too much design over function...

Been there done that! it certainly reliefs the fans, but the computer is still unbearably hot to the touch, I guess that’s the downside of having aluminum as your main material

Hold your horses! This is for desktop work without shelling out 1000 bucks for an actual desktop machine!
I wouldn’t carry these fans around me all the time, only for my graphics class and games at home!

Have you looked at just getting a ~$20 laptop cooling pad? They are all ugly, but presumably they do provide cooling.

Yeah, Apple’s gonna be apple. I’m just really scared that because of the windows partition the SMC doesn’t work as intended and my components fry!
It’s probably a long shot (is SMC part of the basic IO?)
I said it ironically, it wouldn’t pain apple to make the entrances a bit bigger, specially since they love showing off cooling devices in the Pro and the Imac!

That’s not exactly a bad ideas but given the breather vents are to sides it wouldn’t be terribly efficient at cooling the insides.... I do sit it atop a book or two so that the breathers have more clearance and can suck more air!

Could try using some software in Windows to manually set the CPU or GPU (does it have a GPU separate fan?) fanspeeds to max when you know you are about to do some gaming or whatnot?
No idea if it would work on your Mac, but it’s worth a shot. I’ve used SpeedFan to good effect in the past on my own Windows machines:

Where the air comes in is very important, yes... I’d probably put some feet as you say and also vents to the side, it would all be pushed to the OEM breathers and then a smaller portion would be routed to the back to create a vacuum to help air move about.

Yes... I did think about it, but all it’s gonna do is cool the back plate because apple is a hipster that puts tiny breather vents to the side of the computer! It would be a good temp solution though....

Certainly will check it out, in my old MBP I had SMC fan control and whenever I played videogames I’d just default them to maximum speed!

Look into radial computer fans.
They simplify moving air in thin spaces since the fan blows at a right angle.
There are lots of them, example of one: https://www.amazon.com/Brushless-Fugetek-HT-07530D12-75x75x30mm-Computer/dp/B00B2ARV22

Don’t Macbooks have the heat sink in direct contact with the back plate, though? If the back plate gets hot it must’ve drawn the heat out from somewhere, so cooling the back plate will allow it to draw more heat out.

Em... Gotta get back to you on that. AFAIK apple should’ve given it a bit of wriggle room so that the back plate didn’t heat up much to burn users.
However; I do know it heats up quickly...
